| Leyton Orient snap up teenage hot-shot defender |
Leyton Orient have today completed the signing of talented teenage defender, Luke Ashworth, 19, from Wigan Athletic on a two year deal. The hot-prospect, who is originally from Bolton, was named Young player of the Year in only his first season (2006/07) after several sublime performances. The English sensation had already been on loan at Orient this season, impressing boss Martin Ling despite making only three appearances in his brief month-long loan period. But after the January transfer window opened, the Orient boss was keen to add the influential 6”3 centre-back to his depleted squad in a bid to guide his team, who lie 21st in League One, away from the relegation zone. Ashworth, who joins Harry Baker and Charlie Daniels as early January signings, had been given the Latics’ captains armband for this season but was overjoyed to move to the Matchroom Stadium in a bid to step-up from reserve team football. While at Wigan, under the supervision and influence of the Reserve team coach, Keith Bertschin, the ever-consistent Ashworth made over 25 appearances, scoring once.
